About BayAreaHistory.org

What This Site Is

BayAreaHistory.org is a free, public directory of every historical society, museum, heritage organization, and preservation group across the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. It maps 153 organizations in one place so that residents, researchers, educators, and visitors can discover the rich historical resources in their communities.

Our Purpose

Connecting a Fragmented Landscape

The Bay Area is home to one of the densest concentrations of historical organizations in the western United States, yet no single resource has ever cataloged them together. Most of these groups operate independently, many are volunteer-run, and their events, collections, and expertise remain invisible to neighboring communities just a few miles away.

This directory exists to change that. Our goals are to make every organization discoverable through a searchable directory and interactive map, to help the public find historical resources near them, and to lay the groundwork for greater coordination, resource sharing, and collective advocacy among Bay Area heritage organizations.

What This Was Modeled After

This project draws inspiration from successful regional historical alliances in other parts of the country that have solved the same fragmentation problem:

Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums

A network of 500+ member organizations built on a "peers helping peers" philosophy. Their peer-to-peer disaster recovery network is particularly relevant for California, where wildfires, earthquakes, and floods threaten irreplaceable collections. Their regional coalition structure — with local chapters feeding into a central coordinating body — maps naturally onto the Bay Area's nine-county geography.

North Carolina Federation of Historical Societies

A model for how a regional alliance can directly fund its members. They offer mini-grants up to $1,500 for preservation projects, revolving fund loans up to $15,000 for publications, and a quarterly bulletin that keeps every member informed of grant deadlines and shared resources.

Ohio Local History Alliance

Over 300 member organizations organized into 10 regional divisions, each holding spring meetings that feed into an annual statewide conference. A proven template for scaling collaboration across a large, diverse region.

Massachusetts History Alliance

An inclusive membership model spanning all organization types — from large museums to small volunteer societies — with a strong emphasis on advocacy, professional development, and cross-pollination of skills and ideas.

What's Next

From Directory to Alliance

This directory is a first step. The long-term vision is a Bay Area Heritage Alliance — a coordinating body that provides a shared events calendar so programming stops conflicting and starts cross-promoting, grant coordination so small organizations can find and apply for funding together, a disaster recovery network so collections are protected when the next fire or earthquake hits, professional development so volunteer-run societies can learn from each other, and unified advocacy so 153 organizations speak with one voice on preservation funding.

The model is a hybrid of the Minnesota and North Carolina approaches: nine county chapters with central coordination, an advisory board drawn from member organizations, and a headquarters in Benicia — California's former state capital and a natural hub for Bay Area heritage work.
